Christina Applegate Battling Breast Cancer

August 3, 2008

Samantha Who? star Christina Applegate has been diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer, her rep confirmed Saturday.

"Benefiting from early detection through a doctor ordered MRI, the cancer is not life threatening," Christina's spokeswoman said in a statement. "Christina is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery."

The 36-year-old actress has a family history of the disease — her mother battled both breast and cervical cancer.

Christina has been an advocate for breast cancer research and is expected to take part in the star-studded Stand Up to Cancer telethon on Sept. 5.

Christina you and I have grown up together. Being the same age, I had my crushes on you thru puberty on Married with Children and saw the responsible side of your characters grow in Jesse and Don't tell Mom the Baby Sitters Dead. Laughed my head off watching you in The Sweetest Thing and Friends (congrats on the emmy). While I always wondered what you were like as a real person from all of the enjoyment I had gotten out of your great acting, I have to say I am just blown away by your courage, strength, and ability to do all of the right things under your circumstances. So many people worry more about looks than the big picture. I applaud your fight and your wisdom on the desicions you have made as I know they are the toughest you have ever made. My mother was under the same circumstances as you are and went with the lumpectomy in both breasts instead of the masectomy. She is extremely high risk to get it again and it bothers me everyday. Your family will not have these worries thanks to your sound mind. I wish you all of the best. I hope you get this and you smile just for a second as my payment to you for all of the smiles and laughs you have given me on some bad days I have had in the past.

God Bless!

Christina, you are truly an inspiration to all women with the brave choices you have made.
Without a doubt, you have saved other women's lives in the process by bringing awareness that breast cancer can strike even young women. I admire your bravery for going public with such a private matter.

I am an 8 and 7 year breast cancer survivor. I had a recurrence to a lymph node just 1 year, 1 month and 3 days after my original diagnosis and full set of chemo and radiation tx.. I was 43 at the first dx and 44 the second time through. I had to undergo 2 sets of chemo and radiation treatments. I had no prior family history. I did however have a lumpectomy and 2 Pos. lymph nodes. I pray the treatment you have chosen will keep you healthy and cancer free for many many years to come. You are so very lucky you found yours so early. I know lots of women from my on line support site that were dx'd very early and have been around for at least 20 years. I wish you peace, comfort and great health for many many years to come.
-- Karen
