Janet Jackson Honors Michael at BET Awards
Just three days after Michael Jackson's death, his family and friends celebrated his legacy at the BET Awards. Sunday night's show provided an impromptu platform to honor the late King of Pop.
A teary-eyed Janet Jackson addressed her brother's fans during the ceremony, thanking them for their love and support. Dressed entirely in white, she was welcomed with thunderous applause by the devoted crowd.
"My entire family wanted to be here tonight, but it was just too painful," she said. "So they elected me to speak with all of you."
"To you, Michael is an icon," she continued, fighting back tears. "To us, Michael is family. And he will forever live in all of our hearts. We miss him so much."
Michael's father, Joe Jackson, displayed a slightly more upbeat demeanor when he spoke with reporters on the red carpet earlier in the evening.
"I'm great and my family is doing pretty good," he said — a stark contrast to both Janet's sentiments and the somber statement he had released over the weekend. "I wish the world had recognized him when he was living, but right now he's bigger than ever."
Joe also addressed concerns regarding the suspicious cause of his son's death.
"I have a lot of concerns, but I can't get into that," he said. "I don't like what happened." He later told reporters that there is still "a lot to be told. I'll tell you that right now. The truth! The truth is still to be told."
